Elizabeth Ann Stanford
Elizabeth Stanford was born on the 1st of April 1853 near Launceston, Tasmania and she died on the 30th of June 1922 in Toorak, Victoria, Australia aged 69. Her cause of death was officially stated as intestinal obstruction. She was the wife of James Anderson, mother of Sam Anderson and grandmother of Jim Anderson.
As a child in 1864, Elizabeth moved to Invercargill, New Zealand with her family. Her father was a wine merchant and had his own business. In 1870, Elizabeth's mother died of inflammation of the lungs, and her father soon married again.
Following her marriage to James Anderson in 1869, Elizabeth gave birth to ten children in New Zealand, and she, along with eight of her children, sailed to Melbourne from Bluff, New Zealand on the SS Hauroto to join James in Gippsland. After settling in Victoria in 1888 she had four more children, including twins, between 1889-1892.
After farming for many years, Elizabeth and James retired to Albert Park with their four youngest daughters.
Elizabeth and James are buried together at Brighton General Cemetery in Caulfield South, with their daughter Charlotte buried next to them. Another one of their daughters named Emily was cremated after she died in1983, and her ashes were put into the same grave as her parents.
