James Anderson
James Anderson was born on the 11th of November 1842 in Dysart, Fife, Scotland and died on the 23rd of July 1921, aged 78. His cause of death was officially stated as bronchitis and heart failure. He was the husband of Elizabeth Stanford, father of Sam Anderson and grandfather of Jim Anderson.
James' older John migrated to Australia and settled in Victoria, where he worked on the goldfields with his wife. Together they followed the gold trail to New Zealand and later returned to Victoria. It is believed that James travelled to New Zealand from Scotland at the same time as his brother, though he may have travelled to Australia first, as the shipping records were inconclusive and James Anderson was a very common name. While in New Zealand, James worked on the railways during the building of The Kingston Flyer, a historic railway service that opened in 1878 and is a tourist attraction nowadays.
James moved to Gippsland from New Zealand in 1888, and his wife Elizabeth arrived months later with their eight youngest children. The family soon settled in the Bundalaguah/Myrtlebank area, where they had four more daughters.
In 1899, James and his son John (Jack) purchased 459 acres in Heyfield, Melbourne and lived there on until they retired to Albert Park in 1914, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Their Helfield property was known as "Merryvale" when they lived there. They sold the land to J Mitchell and was acquire for Solider Settlement in 1946.
