Margaret Rubina (Ruby) Anderson
Ruby Anderson was born on the 5th of February 1887 in Sale, Victoria, Australia and died on the 13th of June 1974 in Heyfield, Victoria, Australia aged 87. Her cause of death was officially stated as carcinoma of the stomach. She was the mother of Jim Anderson, and the wife of Sam Anderson.
Ruby was the third of five children born in Sale and lived in the Cowwarr and Toongabbie areas before marrying. Ruby's grandparents Hans and Margaretha Harbeck were from Germany, so she learned German as a child. However after her marriage she was not allowed to speak the language at home.
Ruby and her siblings went to school in Cowwarr. Following her marriage to Sam Anderson in 1913, Ruby raised eight children in Denison and would help Sam on the farm. She was a wonderful story-teller and is fondly remembered as a small determined lady warming her backside in front of the open fire.
Ruby and Sam's had an outstanding record with the local football club. Jim, and his brothers Len and Harry all played in the Heyfield premiership sides in 1947, 1948 and 1949. Jim gave 38 years to football, first as a player and then as an administrator. He played football for 21 years, and was the Heyfield Football Club President for eleven years and club president of the Latrobe Football League for three years. Jim's sons Graeme, Barry and Colin all played senior football for Heyfield. Barry also played a season for Collingwood and his son Stuart had a successful career in the AFL with North Melbourne and Fremantle.
Ruby always said that the football talent came from her mothers side of her family. Her cousin Lillian Williamson married Henry Arthur Ablett and that family also produced some very skilled footballers.
After Sam's death in 1947, the farm was given to Ruby and she ran in for several years with her son Harry, until he bought it from her in 1951. Ruby then moved to 33 Herbert Street, Dandenong with her daughter Pearl for the rest of her life.
