Marie Annie Phillipina (Mary) Harbeck
Mary Harbeck was born on the 14th of February in Richmond, Victoria, Australia and died on the 23rd of January 1933 in Upper Baron, Queensland aged 74. Her cause of death was officially stated as chronic myocarditis and cardiac failure. She was the wife of Samuel Anderson, mother of Ruby Anderson and grandmother of Jim Anderson.
Her sister Annie was the mother of Lilian Ablett and Alfred Williamson, who was a Captain in the 1st AIR, and served at Gallipoli, but was unfortunately killed in action while leading a charge in the Battle of Bullecourt on the Western Front in April 1917, when he was 23 years old. He now is commemorated in a French Memorial.
In the early 1920s Mary and her husband Samuel moved from Gippsland to Queensland with their two of their children. The farmed in the Atherton area, where they are both buried to this day.
Her brother Harry was the only person to continue the Harbeck name, since he had eight children and was the only male sibling in their family. Many of Mary’s relatives moved to Australia from Germany after she died, and in Heyfield there is a Harbeck Street, named after one of her family members.
