Sam Anderson
Sam Anderson was born on the 22nd of May in Kingston, South Island, New Zealand and died in Heyfield, Victoria, Australia aged 71. His cause of death was officially stated as coronary occlusion and hypertension. He was the father of Jim Anderson, and the husband of Ruby Anderson.
Sam was one of fourteen children, ten of those being born in New Zealand and the other four being born in Australia. Sam attended school between 1881-1888 at Lumsden and then Fernhills school. Sam sailed to Australia with seven of his siblings and his mother on the SS Hauroto from Bluff, New Zealand, arriving in Melbourne in September 1888. His father was already in Melbourne at that time, as he was looking for land to purchase for the family.
Sam's father purchased land in Gippsland in 1899. Sam travelled back to New Zealand a few times before settling in Melbourne in 1909, when he was listed as a farmer in Denison on the Electoral Roll.
Sam married Margaret Rubina (Ruby) Anderson in 1913 and continued working as a farmer with his brother George helping him on the farm, and his sister Margaret as his housekeeper.
After having their first child (Jim), Sam and Ruby moved to another farm in Denison. The property was known as "Bonnie Doon" and they had seven more children there.
As was the case in most families, WWII had a direct effect on the family of Sam and Ruby. Jim was working on his own farm nearby, and Sam's other sons were away at war. Sam was in poor health so Ruby and three of her daughters had to run the farm.
Sam died in 1947 and and four years later his youngest son Harry purchased the property. Harry and his wife Mary lived at Denison and ran the farm until they retired in the 1980s.
