There is a mystery surrounding Samuel’s siblings, as Samuel is the only one who has any records. A theory is that the other children may have been raised by relatives, but even if this did happen, why was Samuel the only one to live with his father?
Samuel spent his childhood in Victoria, Australia as his father was a “puddler” in the goldfields around Bendigo, and then a landholder in Heyfield and Rosedale. Samuel’s father spent the last year of his life as a paraplegic after slipping on the icy step of a buggy as he was about to deliver cream in 1874.
Samuel married Mary Harbeck in 1881 and their children were born in Sale, Victoria while Samuel was working as a labourer. He lived in Sale with Mary and his daughter Ruby for the rest of his life.
